The NIMAN Family (variously spelt NIMAN, NYMAN & NIEMAN), according to family tradition originally came from the area of the NEMAN River from which they took their name.

There was also the very important Battle of the NIEMAN (sic) River held in 1920, between the Poles & the Soviets, which the Poles won, heralding the emergence of POLAND as an independent nation. We can now look at the Children of Marks Morris NIMAN & Fanny ZAGOFSKY comprised the following.

1. Julius Woolf NIMAN Married Sarah MYERS & had 3 Children who lived & Died in LONDON

2. Abraham NIMAN Married Annie BAKER & had 2 Children who were Born in LEEDS, & though the Parents & 1 Child Died in LEEDS, the other, Archibald Died in MANCHESTER

3. Annie NIMAN Married Philip ROSENTHAL who was Born in NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, & both Died in LEEDS without issue.

4. Sophie NIMAN who never Married, was Born & Died in LEEDS at the age 95 years

5. Isaac NIMAN Died at 1 year old

6. Jacob NIMAN Married Mary SILVERSTEIN & had 3 Children & Died in NOTTINGHAM whereas she Died in LONDON

7. Philip NIMAN Married Annie NIMAN & had 4 Children, all events in LEEDS. One of their Children Hyman who became a Manufacturing Chemist called Harvey NORTON lived & Died in GLASGOW.

8. Davis NIMAN Married Annie NIMAN & had 2 Children, all events in LEEDS

These are 2 separate Annie NIMAN’s the first Born 23/NOV/1888 in RUSSIA & the second 25/FEB/1893 in LEEDS

Marks Morris NIMAN was the eldest child of Levi NIMAN & Hannah SMYLSICK. Both Levi & Hannah was Born about 1833 GOMBIN currently in POLAND, but at that time it was in RUSSIA. They were Married about 1853 in GOMBIN & had 10 Children, the two eldest Born in GOMBIN, whilst the rest were Born in LEEDS.

GOMBIN is the Yiddish name for GABIN the POLISH town, which is about 90 miles west of WARSAW, & about 7 miles south of the VISTULA, POLAND'S largest River, & about 15 miles east of the city of PLOCK.

GOMBIN (or GABIN) is a small town in central POLAND. On the eve of the Holocaust, there were approximately 2,300 Jews living in the town, comprising almost half of its total population. Most of them worked in trade or as artisans. Several charitable organisations were active in the Jewish community, in which almost all the Jewish political parties had branches. In addition, the local Jewish community had public and religious institutions, among them the great 18th century wooden synagogue. Only about 210 of the town's Jews survived the Holocaust.

Marks Morris NIMAN was the eldest child of Levi NIMAN & Hannah SMYLSICK who had the following Children,

1. Marks Morris as above, plus on his parents Death in 1870 when he was 18 years old he went to live with John & Leah HARRIS at 3 St John’s Square, LEEDS.

• It is believed that John & Leah HARRIS were related to Levi & Hannah NIMAN, but we’ve never found any proof. However following the Death of both Parents between DEC/1870 & JAN/1871 Marks, Archer, Lazarus, Rachel & Isaac Boarded with John & Leah HARRIS at the time of the 1871 Census. No trace of Abraham/Alfred though he does re-appear later

2 Archibald “Archer" or "Adge” NIMAN Born about 1857 GOMBIN. On the Death of his parents he moved with his elder Brother Marks Morris NIMAN, to live with Leah HARRIS. He Married Sarah STONE 15/JAN/1879 in MANCHESTER & had 5 Children

3 Joseph Lazarus NIMAN Born 13/SEP/1860 LEEDS & moved with his 2 older Brothers to live with Leah HARRIS.

4 Harriet NIMAN Born & Died 1862 LEEDS

5 Rachel Leah NIMAN Born 13/SEP/1863 LEEDS & moved to live with Leah HARRIS on the Death of her Parents. Married Barnett Abraham GINSBERG 18/MAR/1885 LEEDS. They had 10 Children all Born MANCHESTER, except the eldest Julian Lewis GINSBERG Born LEEDS. Barnett was Born about 1857 KOVNO, LITHUANIA & Died 2/APR/1925 Rachel Died 10/JUN/1938 both MANCHESTER. As far as we know Barnett Abraham GINSBERG isn't connected to our GINSBERG Family

7 Isaac NIMAN Born 17/MAY/1867 LEEDS & like his elder siblings went to live with Leah HARRIS on his Parents Death. Married Jane BERNSTEIN about 1891 & had 4 Children all Born MANCHESTER, BLACKBURN & WIGAN

8 Jacob Levi NIMAN was Born 20/OCT/1868 & Died less than a year later both events in LEEDS

9 Lipman NIMAN Born 14/NOV/1868 in LEEDS but don’t know who looked after him as he was only a baby when his parents Died. He later went to live with his older Brother Marks Morris NIMAN when he was Married to Fanny. Married Betsy BLUMTALL 8/JUL/1894 & had 7 Children. Lipman Died 12/JUN/1929 & Betsy Died 15/JAN/1949 all events LEEDS.

10 Enoch NIMAN aka "Coney", later called "Harry", Born 22/DEC/1870. We’ve no idea what happened to Enoch when his parents Died in fact he’s a mystery until he Married Rebecca SILVERMAN 19/MAR/1893 & had 1 Child called Dinah. Enoch Died 29/MAR/1953 & Rebecca Died 8/MAR/1953, all events LEEDS.

Levi NIMAN aka Levy NEIMAN or Levi NYMAN was Born about 1833 & Married Hannah SMYLSICK before 1853 both events in GOMBIN. Hannah Died in Childbirth in giving Birth to Enoch at the age 37 years & then to compound the tragedy Levi Died a few days later on 31/DEC/1870 aged 38 years old. Levi’s Death Certificate shows 9/JAN/1871, yet Headstone Shows 21/DEC/1870

Levi, Hannah & their Children first lived at 5 Livery Street, LEEDS from at least 11/SEP/1860 until they moved to 43 Myrtle Street, LEEDS at the latest by 1/AUG/1865. They moved to their last home at 70 Nile Street, LEEDS by the time Jacob was Born 29/OCT/1868.

4 Abraham NEIMAN was the younger Brother of Levi NEIMAN Born about 1837 PLOCK, POLAND Married Judith UNKNOWN about 1855 PLOCK, POLAND where they had 7 of their 11 Children, the next 4 were all Born in LEEDS. In 1871 they Lived at 7 Cannon Street, LEEDS Age 34 years old, Tailor Abraham Died 30/OCT/1887 LEEDS Age about 50 years old His Widow Judith Died in NORWICH on 23/DEC/1912, having previously lived in GREAT YARMOUTH, where her Son-in-Law Abraham GOLDSTONE, who was Married to their Daughter Emily NIMAN also lived.

PLOCK is situated on the North Bank of the VISTULA River, more or less opposite GOMBIN. The full name is Stołeczne Książęce Miasto Płock (the Princely or Ducal Capital City of Płock). PLOCK was the Capital of POLAND about 1,000 years ago, so has always been an important city. Jews have had rights extended to them by the Polish King in 1264, making it one of the first places in POLAND to be given those rights.

Having explored the NIMAN Branch of the Family it’s now time to turn to Levi NIMAN’S Brother-in-Law Herman FRIEND. You will remember that Levi NIMAN Married Hannah SMYLSICK & Herman FRIEND Married her elder Sister Amelia SMYLSICK, making Levi & Herman Brothers in Law

* Alice SLOMAN Born abt 1865 in POLAND was part of the Jewish SLOMAN Family who settled in LEEDS. In the 21st Century we had a couple working for us in Harewood as cleaners called Philip & Susan SLOMAN. Philip was a descendant of the SLOMAN Family, but neither of his parents were Jewish. Susan whose Maiden name was MILLER also descended from a JEWISH Family, but by the time she met Philip she had become a JEHOVAHS WITNESS & both her & Philip & their two daughters were members of that religion.

Rod Stewart - You're in my heart another classic number from the best. He just keeps producing brilliant numbers, & then re-launchs them 30 years later & they sound completly new. His American Song Book are all his interpretations of numbers which have already been sung by some of the best vocalists in the world, yet he makes them his own. His concert was by far the best I've ever been to.
