Paul Simon and Ladysmith Black Mambazo - "Diamonds on The Soles Of Her Shoes" Like most of Paul Simon; priceless. When you think of the breadth of his compositions, there's surely no one who can match him.

Let’s see how the GINSBERG, LEVI, LEVY, ZAGOFSKY, NIMAN & FRIEND Families all Connect

#15 Grandmother Sarah LEVY also called Sarah ZAGOFSKY

Let’s start with my Grandmother Sarah LEVY who was the youngest of 5 Children of LevI ZAGOFSKY & his Wife Etty. Her eldest Sister, Sora Rywka ZAGOFSKY was Born about 1852 in SEJNY, RUSSIA, which is close to the current border between POLAND, LITHUANIA & BELARUS. & not far from the present day RUSSIAN enclave of KALININGRAD. Sora Rywka died at the age of 14 years old in about 1866 in SEJNY.

The White Synagogue of SEJNY

In 1897 the population of SEJNY was 3,778 of which 50.8% being 1,918 were Jewish. By 1921 the total population had shrunk to 2,254, whilst the Jewish percentage was now 17.7% being only 399. Needless to say, at the present time, in line with most towns in this area of Eastern Europe the Jewish population is Zero.

The next oldest was also a girl this time called Fanny ZAGOFSKY who was Born about 1853 in SUWALKI, RUSSIA, which was a large Jewish town close to the smaller Shtetl of SEJNY. Fanny came to the UK about 1867 & lived with her Family in MANCHESTER before coming to LEEDS, & by the 1871 Census they lived at 47 Bridge Street, in the Leyland’s area, which was close to the city centre, & became a mainly Jewish neighbourhood. Fanny Married Marks Morris NIMAN on 26/FEB/1873 at the Belgrave Street Synagogue, which was the main Synagogue in LEEDS for many years. They continued living at 47 Bridge Street after they were Married & by 1877, they had already moved to 40 Trafalgar Street. By the 1901 Census they had moved again this time to 14 Samuel Street where they were for the rest of their lives

Despite the resistance, almost all the town's once 7,000-strong Jewish community was deported and murdered, beginning in December 1939, when German troops brought the elderly, sick, and disabled into a nearby forest and machine-gunned them en-masse. The Germans, with help from local collaborators, deported the community's surviving Jews to ghettos in other towns. Nearly all either perished there or were murdered in Nazi concentration camps. The occupying Germans also systematically destroyed all traces of Jewish history and culture in the town, demolishing synagogues, and desecrating Suwałki's Jewish cemetery, where a memorial and wall of gravestone fragments stand today.

Fanny & Marks Morris NIMAN, who was a Tailor, had 8 Children & lived in LEEDS until he Died 25/FEB/1929 aged 75 years old. Fanny Died aged 84 years old in 9/SEP/1937 & both were Buried in the UHC Cemetery on Geldard Road, LEEDS.

Map of Leylands, LEEDS 1881

By the mid-1890s the area was predominantly Jewish, this was after the whole area had been earmarked for demolition in the 1880’s as being unfit housing. In 1892 of the 1300 houses in the area, 900 were occupied by Jews. A synagogue was built, and the school became entirely Jewish, with three other Jewish schools within the Leyland’s.

The school on Darley Street was one of the highest rated in the whole country, all the children were either immigrant’s or the children of immigrants. In 1901 this area of less than 50 acres had a population of more than 6000 Jews.

Their eldest son known as Hyman LEVI was Born about 1857 in SUWALKI & Married Annie BENNETT 26/DEC/1877 also at Belgrave Street Synagogue, LEEDS. They had 9 Children & lived in St Peter’s Square most of their Married life. Hyman like his younger Brother Barnet was a Tailor. His Factory was called “Hyman ZAGOFSKI, Tailors' Maker-Up,” in 1902 it was situated at 5 Telephone Buildings, Telephone Street, LEEDS, Hyman Died 29/FEB/1924 & Annie Died nearly 2 years later on 1/FEB/1926, both in LEEDS.

The youngest son Barnet LEVI was Born about 1858 in SUWALKI & Married Eva HYMAN 28/JUL/1880 & like the rest of his Family this was at Belgrave Street Synagogue, LEEDS. Barnet & Eva had 10 Children & lived at 37 Bridge Street, & moved to 19 Carr Road, LEEDS in 1902. Barnet like his Brother Hyman was a Tailor. Eva Died 9/APR/1927 & Barnet Died over 10 years later 29/DEC/1938. Like the rest of the Family they were both Buried at the UHC Cemetery, Geldard Road, LEEDS.

Hyman & Barnet fell out over 28 houses they owned in Skinner Lane before WW1. The Solicitor involved was called SANDELSON according to Cecil DAVIES

O Sole Mio Duet Bryan ADAMS & Luciano PAVROTTIs

We saw Luciano live in TEL AVIV, when he was pure magic; a real night to remember, & I've never really thought much of Bryan ADAMS, but think this duet hits all the right notes
