·
Frank GINSBERG Born 22/MAY/1905 Died 1980 MANCHESTER Age 74 years old
Goodall, like a number of Family members is a bit of a mystery; first of all, there is his given name Goodall. I can’t find any information about this being used as a Jewish given name anywhere.

Goodall GINSBERG Certificate of Marriage
On 8/SEP/1895, at the age of about 23 he left LIVERPOOL on SS OHIO bound for PHILADELPHIA, PA where he was met by a Cousin who lived at 223, 11th Street PHILADELPHIA, PA,

Copy of Ships Manifest
This may be a fictious Cousin, maybe just a friend, rather than a relative. Why he would go to the USA in 1895, then come back & get Married in the UK on 28/AUG/1900, have two sons 1901 & 1905, & then on 24/JAN/1908 leave from LIVERPOOL on SS CARONIA for NEW YORK by then calling himself Mr GUINNESS, I’ve no idea!!!!

Goodall GINSBERG Census 1901
I couldn’t find any trace of Goodall in AMERICA (under GINSBERG/GUINNESS or even using Goodall) & that includes his death. Lucy must have found proof of his death to be declared his Widow as shown on her Certificate of Marriage to Joseph RAPHAEL 24/JAN/1911 MANCHESTER, there was no issue from this Marriage. Betty GINSBERG, Frank’s daughter also said she thought he may have Died in CANADA, which is something I haven’t followed up.

Lucy Blanche GINSBERG (Goodall's Widow) Certificate of 2nd Marriage
Reverting to their eldest Son Marks Harris GINSBERG, he Married Lily KIND 14/JUN/1924 MANCHESTER, & on his Certificate of Marriage he states he was a Professional Pugilist (ie Boxer) under the name Harry Edward GUINNESS. He further states that his Father was Henry GUINNESS (deceased) & that his Father's profession was a "Professional Pugilist". His Father who was Goodall GINSBERG seems to have changed his name or adopted the name GUINNESS, as that is the name he boarded the ship for NEW YORK on 24/JAN/1908. His Wife/Widow was still known as GINSBERG when she was Married for a second time in 1931 which would seem to contradict that his change of surname was official. I've no knowledge that he became a boxer & his Granddaughter Betty GINSBERG never mentioned this when I spoke to her.

Mark Harris GINSBERG aka Harry Edward GUINNESS
Certificate of Marriage to Lily KIND
The following appeared In London Gazette 5/OCT/1943
“HARRY EDWARD GUINNESS of 18 Cordova Avenue, Denton in the city of Manchester, Works Foreman heretofore called and known by the name of Marks Harris Ginsberg a natural born British subject hereby give notice that on the 25th day of September 1943 I renounced and abandoned the use of my said Christian names of Marks Harris and my said surname of Ginsberg and assumed in lieu thereof the Christian names of Harry Edward and the surname of Guinness and further that such change of name is evidenced by a deed poll dated the 25th day of September 1943 duly executed by me and attested and enrolled in the Enrolment Department of the Central Office of the Royal Courts of Justice on the 30th day of September 1943.—Dated the 1st day of October 1943.
HARRY EDWARD GUINNESS, late Marks Harris Ginsberg. (112)
Mark & Lily had a Son Francis William GUINNESS who in turn Married & had a Daughter called June who also Married & had two sons, none followed Judaism.
Goodall’s younger Son, Frank Married Jessie THOMASON 23/AUG/1933 & had 2 Daughters & a Son Leslie who died before his first Birthday. Frank was a Tailor’s Cutter & worked at this all his life. I spoke to Betty, Frank’s eldest child, who gave me some of the information on Goodall, but I never met her. Frank’s family like his Brother Marks Harris’s didn’t keep to Judaism & sadly I’ve lost contact with them.
We now come to
Leon GINSBERG Born 2/MAY/1873 RUSSIA Died 8/MAY/1944 MANCHESTER Age 71 years old Leon Married Rose ROSENSTREICH 17/MAY/1900 MANCHESTER, but the Marriage didn’t last long as Rose Died 7/NOV/1905 MANCHESTER. They had a daughter

As far as I know he never Married.

Alan & George CARR with Eveline GINSBERG
After Rose’s Death Leon Married Annie BALKIN 4/AUG/1907 MANCHESTER & they had two children.
Mark Harris GINSBERG Born 21/AUG/1908 MANCHESTER Died 8/DEC/1972 MANCHESTER. Age 64 years old
Mark Married Leah Toby GOLDSTONE 30/MAR/1947 at the Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue, MANCHESTER. Mark went to live with Bernard GINSBERG in LEEDS in 1939 & came back to MANCHESTER before his Marriage. Though he started out as an Upholsterer he became a Furniture Salesman by the time of his Marriage. Unfortunately, he never had children & according to Barbara, Mark suffered with MS later in life.
Marks Sister, Rose GINSBERG Born 17/JUN/1914 MANCHESTER Died, 15/JUN/1998 SANTA CLARA, CA Age 83 years old. Never Married, & no issue
Rose never Married, but like her Brother Mark Harris GINSBERG she went to live with her Uncle Bernard in LEEDS, after which she moved to CANADA & lived with Eveline. She eventually moved to CALIFORNIA where she became Professor Psychology San Jose State University, College of Social Sciences.
Lastly, we have
Sarah GINSBERG Born 26/JAN/1876 RUSSIA Died 24/AUG/1946 MANCHESTER Age 70 years old Sarah Married Max JACOBSON, a Master Cap Maker, probably abt 1896 Sarah lived with Marks & Mary at their Family home at 33 Fernie Street, Cheetham, MANCHESTER in 1891 when she was 14 years old & employed as a Machinist. In 1939 she & Max JACOBSON lived at 26 Herbert Street, Cheetham, MANCHESTER, where they lived until Sarah Died.

Sarah Death Certificate
We know they had at least one child, whose name started with a D, but that’s all we’ve found up to now. Except of course that he was registered as the Informant of their uncle Philip GINSBERG'S death on 2/NOV/1922 . At that time he lived with his Parents at 3 Bell Street, Cheetham, MANCHESTER
We know where many of the relatives who Died in the UK are Buried, in many cases, besides the Cemetery we have the plot numbers. In addition, we have photos of many of the Headstones. The importance of the headstone is that a Jewish Headstone shows the Hebrew Name of the deceased. For those that don’t know, this means that not only does it show the Hebrew Name of the deceased, but also the Father of the deceased in the following format;
ENGLISH IN HEBREW ON HEADSTONE
Cecil Headstone
Cecil Son of Bernard Zussel Ben Baruch זוסל בן ברוך
Bernard Headstone
Bernard Son of Mark Baruch Ben Mordechai Ztvi ברוך בן מרדכי צבי
This makes it easier than with a Gentile Family into finding the next Generation, as you have a clue who the Father is, except of course where the Headstone is so worn you are unable to read it.
Jewish people traditionally didn't have surnames & were known by their Hebrew Names ie my Grandfather would have been know as Baruch Ben Mordechai Ztvi. This changed on 23 July 1787, five years after the Edict of Tolerance, the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II issued a decree called Das Patent über die Judennamen (The patent on the names of Jews), which compelled the Jews to adopt German surnames. At the end of the 18th century after the Partition of Poland and later after the Congress of Vienna, the Russian Empire acquired a large number of Jews who did not use surnames. They, too, were required to adopt surnames during the 19th century.
